Colonia Lazaro Cardenas boasts the city’s largest fish market as well as a modern, sprawling sports complex. This bustling little neighborhood runs from the picturesque Parque Hidalgo, near Vallarta’s Malecon, to the city’s bypass, the Libramiento.
The Agustin Flores Contreras Municipal Sports Stadium is a public facility where locals and expats alike can pursue a multitude of sports and fitness activities. The city recently invested five million pesos in improvements to the stadium, and it shows. You can find three soccer fields, four basketball courts, a recently updated running track and two baseball diamonds. There are open-air exercise machines, playground equipment and even a skate park for skaters from beginner to advanced levels!
Vallarta is famous for its seafood cuisine, and many of the local restaurants do their purchasing at the large and abundant mercado de mariscos in the heart of the Lazaro Cardenas neighborhood. If you enjoy cooking your own freshly caught fish and other fruits of the sea, this is the market for you! Located on the streets of Brasilia and San Salvador, the vendors here offer reasonable prices, fresh seafood and other produce for any other household needs.
Across the street from the market, you will find the colorful and traditional panteon, or cemetery. Naturally, visiting this historical cemetery on the Day of the Dead is a must if you are interested in Mexican culture. Full of colorful, elaborate headstones marking the passing of each loved one, the panteon is a beautiful tribute to the Mexican’s view of life and death.
Lazaro Cardenas is a lovely, vibrant neighborhood that is a ten to fifteen minute walk from downtown Vallarta. If you wish to truly know Puerto Vallarta, you do need to stop by and spend a little time in this friendly colonia. If you stop at the market, don’t forget your shopping bag. Grab a big oilcloth tote from Erica Maree. They’re roomy enough for all your purchases and stain-resistant oil cloth just makes good sense!
